No Economic Stimulus - Just big deficits

The following is a Press Release from MNC - what they don't say is there is a 1.8 million plus deficit with no plan of how to recover.... Economic Stimulus looks more like asking Strahl to look the other way and just sign over money. Where is the Auditor General when you need her?

Métis Nation has "Deep Misgivings" on Canada’s Economic Action Plan

Ottawa, ON – The leadership of the Métis Nation at a meeting held on Friday, January 30th expressed deep misgivings with the 2009 Federal Budget and will be seeking assurances from Prime Minister Stephen Harper that Métis Nation citizens will benefit from Canada’s Economic Action Plan.

After undertaking a detailed analysis of the budget plan, President Clément Chartier and the Presidents of the provincial Métis governments from Ontario-westward found a distressing absence of any Métis-specific economic stimulus opportunities.

"While the Federal Government has committed over $20 Billion in economic stimulus, nothing was set aside for Métis communities or Métis Nation citizens", said Chartier.

Of the $1.4 Billion in new spending for Aboriginal peoples in the 2009 Federal Budget, $1.2-billion is set aside exclusively for First Nations and Inuit.

The Métis are eligible to participate in the $200-million committed to Aboriginal skills and employment training but even here none of these dollars have been committed specifically for Métis.

Chartier reaffirmed the desire of the Métis Nation to work with the federal government and Parliament to strengthen the economy for Métis Nation citizens and all Canadians.

"My office has received some preliminary assurances from the government that elements of our Métis Nation Economic Stimulus Proposal can be addressed both within and outside the budget but I will be seeking clarification from the Prime Minister on where specifically we will access stimulus funding."

The Métis National Council submitted a Métis Nation Economic Stimulus Proposal as part of the pre-budget consultations. It called for much needed Métis-specific investment in social housing, education and skills development, and for additional support to businesses and entrepreneurs. The proposal was based on short-term, "shovel-ready" initiatives which would have had significant economic stimulus for Métis and all Canadians.

"The Métis Nation set out a reasonable and fiscally responsible proposal for ways the Federal Government could strengthen our people's efforts through these turbulent economic times," said Chartier.

So when you say 1.8 million deficit, does this include the Health dollars that Boucher used? We need to be accountable for money that is spent for Metis programming.

When will Metis wake up and realize that we don't count! The mention in the constitution was just a gesture of good will. We have no federal number, hell the feds don't even recognize us as their responsibility but a responsibility of the provinces. Our leaders are so busy munching at the trough that they fail to recognize that we need some way to be counted with some type of "GOVERNMENT" id not these run off your computer id's each provincial organization puts out that anyone can get. When this happens then maybe the government may look at us and include us.

The Metis as a people group pose no threat to any government as we can get 20 of us to agree on anything let alone 200,000 - Its in our blood to be independent and not controlled by government but the leaders that be want to turn us into dependent First Nations. I say good for the government to not include anything for the Metis. Maybe the Metis will now realize that they have to do it themselves without "handouts".

Look at it this way - NO money from the government - NO accountability to the government. Just as some of us Metis like it!!!

Being Metis I know that I can access any government funded program that any other Canadian has access to. I don't need the government's recognition to prove that I am Metis. I believe in equal rights but not special rights. Our Metis forefathers didn't sign treaty for a reason so why are we now trying to reach for rights we never had or wanted? This Metis is no one's responsibility, federal or provincial and I for one would will keep it that way

No one's responsibility?

As economic development intitatives are available to First Nations, and Inuit only.

Leaving one of the Constitutionally recognized Aboriginal people's out of any Stimulus plan, is nothing more than a violation of the Constitution, and past Royal Proclamations protecting our Rights as Metis.

The deal our forefathers took was proven to be fradulent, with many not knowing what Scrip was! Scrip Speculators bought up now what was our rightful inheritance.

How can you say NO one is responsible for mistreatment of a whole Nationhood. Life is a struggle never the less being Metis and face discrimination on every avenue.

Metis people deserve no less and have went through enough hardships from the Loss of lands, Loss of families from Small pox... etc. to say we are no ones responsibility to be written into the Governments plans...

WTF???????????

Hate to burst your bubble Anonymous, but those are just words in the constitution! All they mean is that we belong to a "group" called "Aboriginal Peoples of Canada" Doesn't guarantee anything to the "METIS"!

What are you, some kind of "Wannabe First Nations" Whiner who wants government handouts too?

Nobody cares if our ancestors got the short end of the stick. It doesn't matter, I said this before, "Cry me a river, build a bridge, and GET OVER IT! Live for the future - your future!

"Metis people deserve no less and have went through enough hardships"

Again I hate to break it to you, but we're about to go through some more. I often wonder where people get this idea that we are "OWED" something by "whoever" just because we have hard times? Its pretty sad if you haven't realized that life isn't a bed of roses and the good things won't get handed to you on a silver plater. Life is hard, work is hard and only YOU can do for YOU what YOU want.

To take a line from Rocky Balboa, "Its a rough mean world, it punches hard and you gotta punch back or roll over. You got no choice how you come in, but it's your choice how you go out. If you know what you're worth, then go out and get what you're worth, but don't be pointing fingers and saying you ain't where you wanna be cause of him or her. Cowards do that, not men. .... You gotta believe in yourself or you aint gonna have no life."
