Internal tiff puts $500,000 in limbo
Internal squabbling has put half a million dollars for the Métis Nation of Alberta up in the air.

Internal squabbling has put half a million dollars for the Métis Nation of Alberta up in the air.A conference call was to be held on March 27 to ratify a 2007-08 framework agreement between the MNA and the Government of Alberta, but that call was cancelled because seven of 14 member MNA provincial council refused to take part.

“Since April 2007 these same seven members have attempted to obstruct the normal business functions of the MNA,” said Audrey Poitras, president of the MNA. “All efforts to have the council approve the agreement have failed.”

Over $500,000 in funding for the MNA head office is at stake, and while the seven-year framework agreement was signed this past year, both the ministries of justice and aboriginal relations believe the MNA provincial council must ratify the agreement.

'This was our last chance to have the framework agreement ratified,” said Poitras. “All members of the provincial council were notified five days before the meeting that there would be a conference call to review the ratification of the framework.”

Karen Collins, MNA president for Region 2 that includes Lloydminster, is confident individual agreements can be reached so that each region has funds, but the services provided from the head office will certainly take a hit.

“The provincial government has indeed done agreements directly with each of the regions,” said Collins, adding that those agreements ran out on March 31, but arrangements are being made to come up with new agreements.

“We’re confident that we can go through the necessary process and meet the criteria for funding,” said Collins. “As a nation, we still have issues that have to be dealt with to ensure operating fund dollars are extended to our head office.

'The MNA received a letter – dated March 20 – from Gene Zwozdesky, Alberta’s minister of aboriginal relations, stating that the funding was put back into the general revenue fund at the end of March.“However … I have instructed department officials to continue working with the six (MNA) regions to ensure that the individual funding agreements for the 2007-08 period are expedited and paid out by my ministry directly to each zone,” added Zwozdesky.

Since the failed conference call, Poitras has pleaded with the ministry of aboriginal relations to reconsider the need to ratify the agreement.“The benefits of the Metis community generally should not be lost because a few people want to play politics,” said Poitras. “We must find a way to avoid having seven people sabotage funding the province has agreed to make available to the Métis people living in Alberta.”

Collins is mainly concerned with the seven dissenting members, and the growth that could have been made if they were more cooperative.“It has stunted the development and the progress that we could have made since April 1 of last year,” said Collins. “The people in Region 2 are very anxious for everything to get back on track.”

Letter from a Concerned Métis Citizen – Check It Out! This is on the Metis Mix Blog

http://metismix.blogspot.com/2008/04/letter-from-concerned-metis-citizen.html

Following the lead of other's;

I would also like to express my deepest gratitude to our President, the Honourable Audrey Poitras.

Madame President, I believe this nation, which you in a very large way have helped build from extremely difficult beginnings to something that could and should be historic, is in debt to you. Should the ‘Dissident Seven’ as they have so notoriously become known, feel they have the right or the power to overthrow our elected government through a petty campaign of cheating, lying, and deceit, they have another thing coming. This group of seven has obviously lost hold of the most important thing that has made us, the Métis Nation of Alberta as successful as we have been and that is cohesion. It becomes painfully obvious that they use their positions in the Métis Nation for their own personal mandate, and they are influencing others to believe in their lies. This can not be tolerated if we are to survive. I believe that most Métis understand it is not what you say about others, as they do, but it is your actions that show who you really are. Your actions have always been in the best interests of the Métis people as a whole. The actions of the ‘Dissident Seven’ have been to discredit members of this proud nation and bring this nation to her knees. If it can be proven that these seven members or any others have conspired, and cost our membership numerous dollars, which can translate to jobs, scholarships and help for the needy, then I believe we have to use whatever legal means necessary to remove them from office permanently.

Madame President, at no time in our history has it been more important for us to have someone of your stature and understanding guide the helm than now. I truly hope that you will continue to assume this role and step forward this fall for our next election, and never give up. And I hope that someone who you can trust finally steps forward to assume the role of Vice-President; the ‘Dissident Seven’ must be stopped now! With your leadership, the 21st century will be the century of the Métis.

This is another letter from someone who is not happy with the embarrassing 7:

How can we help support Audrey?

This whole situation is ridiculous and shameful! Trevor Gladue and whoever his cohorts are, are embarrassing and should be ashamed to call themselves
Metis. I always believed that being Metis meant being proud, inteligent and
hard working. These people are manipulative, backstabbing, selfish and only
concerned with their own interests, not that of the Metis people. How can
they assume that they speak for all of us.

THEY DO NOT SPEAK FOR ME!! I am totally ashamed of all of them and whole
heartedly support Audrey Poitras for her honesty and integrity and for all
that she has done for the Metis people. In my opinion, she represents all
that is Metis!

It seems to me, that by these people behaving the way they are, they are
creating an injustice to all of us who are proud to be Metis and are proud
of accomplishments that have been made in recent years. I think these
people are trying to take all of that away from us. I thought that we were
supposed to be a united people!!!

I can't believe how this situation seems to be getting worse instead of
better. Is it time for people like me to start speaking up and how can we
fight back against all of this negative and shameful behaviour?

Please let me know.

Karla

My family is speechless at the lack of compassion Trevor Gladu shows our President Audrey Poitras. This lady lost her mother recently and this disgusting group continue to send letters of lies and disrepect in our community. Give this lady some peace to mourn her loss!!
Audrey, My family have been with the Metis Nation since Stan Daniel (1970s) You are the first president to teach us dignity, respect, HONESTY and decency in all the people you work and meet with. Audrey, please you must run in this election. We will lose the Metis Nation assets in one year if Trevor Gladu gets in.
God be with you and your family during this trying time.
